Volunteers lead the way at Montreal’s 2024 Steps for Life walk!

There are hundreds of volunteers involved in planning Steps for Life events each year. Most planning committees have 4 to 8 volunteers who plan their local events throughout the year. Each event requires additional “day of” volunteers to help with registration, T-shirts, set-up and marshalling.

As a national event, the energy of our volunteers in roughly 30 communities across the country is what continues to drive Steps for Life. New ideas blend with the tried-and-true approach to continuously elevate the experience for participants year after year. What never changes is the drive, passion and commitment of the volunteers who are making it all happen.

What unites the majority of Steps for Life volunteers is their shared commitment to workplace health and safety. Many have experienced a life-altering workplace injury, illness or fatality first-hand – as a worker, a friend or family member, or in their role as a health and safety professional.

We recently asked Steps for Life volunteers to share their main motivation for volunteering their time and expertise for this one of a kind event, and here’s what a few of them had to say:

“I’m a health and safety consultant and the major part of my job is worker safety and creating a culture of safety in the workplace. I am passionate about it and would like to continue to work with the organization for many more years to come. This was my first year as a volunteer so that was memorable!”

“I got involved with safety because a friend was killed at work, and I’m involved with this group for the same reason.”

Volunteering for Steps for Life is important to me because it is a practical way of helping families who have experienced workplace tragedy be it fatality, injury or illness.”

“Having seen the devastation workplace injury can cause, it is great to be involved with an organization that is not only passionate about after care but also prevention. Volunteering aligns with my personal beliefs and my work as a safety professional.

Each year, the base of volunteers making Steps for Life grows as more communities onboard and individual events grow. So if Steps for Life sounds like something you’d like to be a part of, we’d love to hear from you! You can fill in a volunteer application here

The mission of Threads of Life is to help families heal through a community of support and to promote the elimination of life-altering workplace injuries, illnesses and deaths, and Steps for Life is unique in its power to contribute to both sides of this mission. We’d love to have you join us.
