Volunteering With Threads of Life
Volunteers play a critical role in the success of Threads of Life. Volunteers provide support to families affected by workplace tragedy, share their stories as members of the Speakers Bureau or in print, and plan and help out at events.
Volunteer opportunities
Threads of Life offers volunteer opportunities with Steps for Life, Speakers Bureau, Volunteer Family Guides, and Trade Shows.
Help with Steps for Life - Walking for Families of Workplace Tragedy
Steps for Life is Threads of Life’s signature fundraising event taking place from coast-to-coast each spring. Steps for Life walks are planned by volunteer committees, who work together to ensure the success of their local walk. Committees look after all aspects of planning the event, from finding local sponsors to promotion to logistics.
If you don’t see an existing walk in your community, but would like information on starting one, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We would welcome the chance to speak with you about the potential to form a committee and launch a new walk. We have many tools and resources to support new committees.
Volunteers are also required to assist on walk day with set up, registering walkers, route marshalling, food service and more.
For more information please contact us. Or, if you are ready to proceed, please complete our Volunteer Application Form!
Grow and Connect Threads of Life as a Community Engagement Volunteer
Community Engagement Volunteers work independently in their community to help raise awareness of Threads of Life by reaching out to select local contacts to introduce them to Threads of Life and establish opportunities for support. Community Engagement Volunteers are the local face of Threads of Life and work to develop mutually beneficial relationships with community contacts. These relationships will lead to more people who have experienced a workplace tragedy finding Threads of Life and receiving the support they need and may also lead to increased financial and volunteer support for the organization.

Become a Volunteer Speaker
Personal testimony is one of the most effective ways to teach people the importance of health and safety, and demonstrate the consequences when something goes wrong. Our volunteer speakers are all Threads of Life members who have personally experienced a life-altering workplace injury, an occupational disease, or work-related fatality in their family. Presentations take our speakers into schools, conferences and workplaces. Requests and arrangements for speakers are coordinated by Threads of Life staff.
We offer:
- public speaking training
- flexible commitments (you choose when and where you are willing to speak)
- reimbursement of travel expenses
- support in developing presentation materials
Speakers Bureau training is held annually. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Speakers Bureau, or would like more information, please call 1-888-567-9490 or send an email to us at [email protected].
Become a Volunteer Family Guide
To become a Volunteer Family Guide you need to have personally experienced a workplace tragedy, and be far enough along on your journey that you are able to offer your support to others who may be just starting.
Volunteer Family Guides are patient and active listeners, with good self-knowledge and a sense of compassion. Training will help to reinforce knowledge of the principles of grief, communication skills and healthy coping skills.
Volunteer Family Guide training sessions are typically held every two years. If you are interested in becoming a Volunteer Family Guide, please contact Karen Lapierre Pitts at [email protected] or phone 1-888-567-9490.
Spread the Word at Trade Shows & Events
Threads of Life is regularly invited to attend trade shows and third party fundraising events. We rely on our volunteers to represent Threads of Life at these events, speaking with trade show exhibit booth visitors, sharing information, distributing materials and answering questions. These opportunities are ideal for volunteers who have flexible schedules and may only want to volunteer occasionally. If this is of interest, please complete our Volunteer Application Form and we will contact you.
