“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”

It’s a saying that originated from a Chinese proverb, and has come to remind us that long journeys all begin with a small forward motion. The first step – and every step we take to follow – is a metaphor that can extend to every action we take in dedication to our mission. And at our flagship annual fundraiser, Steps for Life – Walking for Families of Workplace Tragedy, it can be taken quite literally as we cut the ribbon and set off on the first step of our 5K walk. One step at a time.

But the truth is that Steps for Life starts much earlier than that. The event is the culmination of many hours of dedicated effort from many individuals — primarily volunteers. More than 300 volunteers across Canada make Steps for Life happen in more than 30 communities. They make Steps for Life the incredibly supportive and mission-driven event that it is. And we couldn’t do it without them.

What the planning committees in each community are looking for before the event is an indication of how many are coming! We all know it’s challenging to plan an event when you don’t know how many are planning to come. How many T-shirts do we need? How many volunteers will we need at registration? How many kids are we expecting? (Note: Five of our communities are walking for the first time, or returning after a few years: Airdrie, AB; Fredericton, NB; Kelowna, BC; Sault Ste. Marie, ON and Windsor, ON. Your pre-registration is especially helpful for them!)

The first step that we ask of you today, is to head to the (fully refreshed!) Steps for Life website and sign up! Your registration helps us greatly as the volunteers plan each event. So head to stepsforlife.ca and register today. Your kick-start donation will also be the first step toward your fundraising goal – and helping us reach our country-wide goal of $900,000 to fund much-needed support programs for families affected by workplace injury, illness and fatality.

So, can we plan on seeing you there? If so, head on over and registerit’s quick and easy and helps a lot!
