Dunk the boss to raise funds for Threads of Life!

How to hold a fundraising event to support families of workplace tragedy

Each year, Threads of Life is most fortunate to be selected by companies across Canada to receive the proceeds from their fundraising events. A company may hold a golf tournament, hockey tournament or, in the case of one Threads of Life supporter, bring in a dunk tank and charge employees a few dollars for a chance to soak the boss.

Corporate fundraising events are important to Threads of Life for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that they help raise awareness, and generate revenue while saving time and money. For the company organizing the event, it is a great opportunity to align yourself with a charity that reflects your corporate values, to engage your employees in a meaningful activity and to have some fun.

Recently, the Ontario Petroleum Contractors Association (OPCA) hosted their annual golf tournament, donating the proceeds, more than $7500, to Threads of Life for the second year in a row. When asked why they chose to support Threads of Life, OPCA Executive Director Michelle Rae said “We chose to support Threads of Life because like us, they believe safety is a core belief. Threads of Life volunteers have made a huge impact on our members by sharing their stories and we wanted to give back to ensure the Threads of Life programs continue to educate workers.”

Golf tournaments are a popular choice as a fundraiser. But there are many other creative, engaging and fun ideas that can be easy to organize:

  • Bowling tournament
  • Raffle
  • 50/50 draw
  • Dress down days
  • Staff barbecue
  • Silent auction

Companies may also choose to hold a workplace Steps for Life walk for their employees to officially kick off NAOSH (North American Occupational Safety and Health) Week.  Steps for Life walks take place in more than 30 Canadian cities on the first weekend in May. But if your company doesn’t have a walk close by, organizing your own in-house mini-version is an ideal way to demonstrate your commitment to occupational health and safety while supporting Threads of Life.

It’s not just companies that hold successful fundraising events. Individuals can easily organize fundraisers for their favorite charity simply by doing the things you may already be doing. Planning a garage sale to declutter? Donate the proceeds to Threads of Life. Hosting a party? Rather than hostess, birthday, or other gifts, ask your guests to make a donation to Threads of Life in your honour. Planning a wedding? Instead of giving your guests wedding favours they may never use, celebrate your special day by making a donation.

There are many ways to raise funds for Threads of Life besides the ideas discussed here. If you or your company is interested in hosting an event for Threads of Life, the best way to start is to give us a call at 1-888-567-9490. We can support your efforts by providing Threads of Life print materials, arranging for a volunteer to speak at your event, and promoting and recognizing your support in our newsletter, through social media and in our blog.
